It seems the Skype team have been busy lately. They have announced that Skype 5.0 for Linux Beta is now released.
Along with the Beta upgrade comes a bunch of new features. Such as, the ability to call mobile and landlines with Skype credit. Make one-to-one video calls from Linux to Skype users on Android, iOS, Windows, and Mac. And the number of unread conversations will now show in the Unity Launcher.
How To Install Skype For Linux Beta In Ubuntu
To begin installing, you will need to fire up a new terminal window. You can do this with the hotkeys Ctrl + Alt + T or you can find the terminal in the Unity Dash menu.
firstly, you will need to check if “apt-transport-https” is installed. To do this, copy and paste the following command into the terminal and hit enter. This will also install the package if it isn’t found.
dpkg -s apt-transport-https > /dev/null || bash -c "sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get install apt-transport-https -y"
Type in your password if you’re prompted. This will elevate your user privileges for the install. You won’t have any visual prompts on the screen. Simply type in your password and hit enter.
Next, you will need to download and install a Skype GPG key. You can do this by typing the following command into the terminal.
curl https://repo.skype.com/data/SKYPE-GPG-KEY | sudo apt-key add -
Add the apt repository for Skype for Linux to your package list with the command.
echo "deb [arch=amd64] https://repo.skype.com/deb stable main" | sudo tee /etc/apt/sources.list.d/skype-stable.list
You can now update your package list by typing the command.
sudo apt-get update
Finally, with our package list updated. you can now install Skype for Linux by typing the following into the terminal.
sudo apt install skypeforlinux
How To Remove Skype For Linux Beta In Ubuntu
To begin removing Skye for Linux from your system, you will need to open a new terminal. Simply use the hotkeys Ctrl + Alt + T or launch the terminal from the Unity Dash Menu.
With the terminal open type the following command to remove Skype for Linux.
sudo apt remove skypeforlinux && sudo apt autoremove
